The Future of the UA, from an Apprentice Perspective

UA Special Called Meeting Toronto April 25, 26, 2012 apprentices attending from across Canada in a half day discussion group share their thoughts and feelings on their organization. 
 
As Apprentices you are the future of the UA, our future leaders, and our future workforce that will continue to build and maintain this country. You will play a vital role in the years to come in our successes or failures.  Our Industry has changed. Today we are here to discuss change with you and we are here to listen.

 

 

A.      Why are you a member of the UA?

 

·         Health & Welfare Benefits********

·         Pension********

·         Safe work environment/Safety Training****

·         Family member suggested it****

·         Fair Wages****

·         Job security****

·         Strength in numbers, being a part of a team***

·         Looking for a career not a job***

·         Brotherhood/Sisterhood*

·         Higher Skills Level- Training*

·         Good worker rights – representation*

·         Hands on personality – good fit

·         Equality

·         Leadership direction

·         Contractor worked for required it

·         Change of career

·         Opportunity to expand/grow career

·         Belonging to an evolving/elite workforce

 

B.      Are you satisfied being a member of the UA? Yes or No and please explain.

 

·         Yes, good training opportunities***

·         Yes, proud to be UA member**

·         Yes, wages are good ***

·         Yes, enjoy the job security**

·         Yes, enjoy the benefits**

·         Yes, however apprentices should have a voice and vote**

·         Yes, happy to belong but change is necessary*

·         Yes, pride of my involvement and work

·         Yes, only if the UA is actually willing to make changes

·         Yes, SFE needs greater enforcement

·         Yes, lots work opportunities

·         Yes, however, better in field training would be positive

·         Yes, very productive and essential to moving organization forward

·         Yes, however fear amalgamation with larger local

·         Yes, well respected in the industry

·         Somewhat satisfied, training is ok, SFE need better enforcement

·         Yes, learnt so much about construction in general, am more well rounded

·         Yes, to a point some take membership for granted

·         Yes, but many things need to change

·         Yes, enjoy the representation of the Local union

·         Yes, because I am proud to be a member but not proud to be associated with slackers

·         Yes, been employed for 5 year, no because of steady decline in Market share

·         Yes, but did I board a sinking ship?

·         Yes, however there is a lack of pride among apprentices/journeyperson

·         Yes, however negativity driving away membership

 

C.      Looking at your long term goals what do you hope to get out of your membership?

·      Good Benefits – Health & Welfare & Pension******

·      Better education/career/ diversified qualifications*****

·      Personal & professional success/growth ****

·      Long term employment***

·      Long term experience/employment***

·      Voice and vote for apprentices***

·      Steady work opportunities *

·      To build a strong bond with union brothers/sisters*

·      Fair Wages

·      Help the industry grow

·      Growth and setting the bar for future generations

·      Friendship

·      Same effort made by each member

·      Getting involved in the business side of the Local

 

 

 

 

 

D.      What could your Local Union do to engage you to become more involved at the Local union level?

 

·      Apprentice voice and vote******

·      Apprentice representation***

·      Attending more conferences such as these*** - apprentice networking

·      Why would a attend a meeting when my opinion is not even considered

·      Mandatory union meetings/ consequences for none attendance

·      Rewarded for attending union meetings*

·      More apprentice only meetings

·      Incentive driven activities

·      Show us the leadership way and lead by example

·      Hold monthly events, activities so apprentices can interact and bond*

·      More informative union meetings

·      SFE needs to be enforced properly

·      Technological advancements  - communication

·      Live online meetings for those apprentices that cannot attend in person*

·      Instill a greater sense of personal ownership and responsibility

·      Better instruction in terms we understand – speak in layman terms

·      Apprentice column in the UA Journal

·      Leadership and Business Development
